Frequently Asked Questions

Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

How can you tell if your produce is organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are not given antibiotics.
  • Animals are not ever given hormones.
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage solids
  • GMOs not allowed
  • Antibiotics have never been administered
  • No hormones ever given
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge (if it's a non-GMO)
  • No irradiation

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat is real food grown without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or hormones. Organic meat is also a guarantee that the animals weren’t fed any genetically altered feed. The meat is safe to consume because it contains no harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are healthier for our environment. Eating organic foods helps reduce pollution in the environment, such as rivers and lakes. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Buying local helps keep more money circulating within the community rather than going out of state. Local businesses often offer discounts to their customers by shopping locally. Buy local to save jobs and not send them overseas.

Statistics

  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

How to buy organic meat even on a tight budget

In this post I'll share some tips and techniques for buying organic meat that won't break the bank.

I'll give you some tips about where to find organic meats at a low price and how much it costs per pound. You will learn how to make the best out of what you purchase.

For healthy eating, you don’t have to spend a lot. Sometimes, you have to use your creativity to save money while still eating well. Here are my top tips for keeping food costs down and still enjoying the many benefits of organic meat.

  1. Wholesale clubs - Sams Club, Costco, and Sams Club offer great deals on bulk foods like chicken breasts. You may be able to get large quantities of meat for as low as 50 pounds if your home is near one of these stores. This ensures that meat is not wasted. If you buy it in bulk you can freeze it so it lasts more.
  2. Look online to save money on meat. For example, Amazon has a weekly deal called Prime Pantry, which includes free shipping on orders over $35. There are discounts on roasts, ground beef and lamb steaks as well as pork loins. It's easy to browse their website and see what's available at different times.
  3. Find a local farmer - Local farmers usually charge less than big box retailers because they do not pay considerable fees to stock their shelves. They know exactly what the animals ate and drank to ensure they are fully informed about what is in their bodies.
  4. Look for lean cuts of meat. Fatty meats are generally more expensive to cook. Therefore, choose the leanest cuts. The most commonly used cuts include flank steak, tenderloin and top round steaks. These cuts are very low in fat and high in protein.
  5. Try new recipes. Start cooking with ingredients that you have never used before. This is one of the easiest ways reduce your grocery costs. You'll be surprised at how many delicious dishes can you create using fresh tomatoes.
  6. Remaining meat and poultry can be used for sandwiches, salads or soups. You can make quick meals or lunches from leftover meat.

So, there you are! That's my list of tips on how to afford organic meat even though you're on a budget. Are you able to offer any additional tips? Any other suggestions?
