Frequently Asked Questions
Is organic food better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.

Is organic meat healthier?
This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. But here's the rub, organic food is becoming more popular while conventional food continues to fall out of favour.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. Organic foods are safer for our bodies and help to reduce pollution.
But there are two sides to this coin. Organic produce takes more time to grow and requires greater resources. Organic food is more expensive than non-organic.
Organic meats are typically higher priced than conventionally raised animals. However, there are ways to reduce these costs without sacrificing quality.
Locally grown produce is a great way to save money. Locally grown fruits and veggies help to lower prices because farmers get incentives to grow good crops.
You can also look for deals to reduce costs. There are often discounts offered when purchasing organics.
A third way to save money on meat consumption is to eat less. Feeding livestock can be very expensive.
There are many reasons why organic food is better for our bodies and the planet, but we should be careful not to overlook the cost.
What are organic foods and how do they compare?
Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge and confinement feeding. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops can naturally grow, so no chemicals are used by farmers to combat pests or weeds.
Organic farming practices help maintain soil quality and reduce erosion. Organics have more nutrients than traditional food, which makes them better for our health. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.
What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products
USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.
When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.
Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How To
Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?
Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.
In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.
The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.
A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
