What are my top priorities when buying organic products
USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.
If you are buying other types of livestock, make sure to check the label to determine the percentage of their diet. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
What is the difference between organic food and inorganic?
Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.
The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. You may also find products that are labeled as "natural", which could contain synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.

These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?
Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).
In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.
Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.
According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.
The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
