Why You Should Worry About Your Organic Food | JHS Skeptical Sunday

Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic food healthy?

There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. There are exceptions, but the majority of the time, both options will be available. Organic food is healthier as it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals or pesticides, herbicides and preservatives.

Organic food can be found in supermarkets throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Organic food can now be found in many grocery stores making it easier for shoppers to choose organic products.

Organic food is also better tasting and more nutritious because it contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Organics are grown without using pesticides and fertilizers. They also don't pollute soil or water.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices and requires farmers to follow strict guidelines to ensure that organic produce is safe to eat. There are more than 30 million acres of US farmland that have been certified organic.

Organic food is often less expensive than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), organic food actually costs 10% less per pound. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.

Organic food has been a popular alternative for standard American diets. Organic food is not only available in gourmet restaurants and specialty markets, as many people may believe. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.

What is organic food?

Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food can be grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful substances. These chemicals can be harmful to both animals and people.

Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.

Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. For example, organic farming uses natural methods and soil amendments to grow crops, while conventional farming uses synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Organic foods must comply with strict guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The National Organic Program Standards require that all organic foods are free of prohibited substances such as antibiotics and growth hormones, genetically modified organisms or industrial solvents. Organic food must not be produced with toxic chemicals, petroleum or sewage sludges or ionizing radioactive substances.

Why should I choose organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

Is organic meat better?

This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. Here's the problem: Organic food is becoming more sought-after, while traditional food continues to decline in popularity.

The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. In addition to being safer for our health, organic products also help the environment by reducing pollution and waste.

There are many sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer and requires more resources. This means organic food will cost more than its non-organic counterpart.

Organic meats can be more expensive that those from conventionally raised animals. But there are ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality.

Buy local to save money. Locally grown fruits and veggies help to lower prices because farmers get incentives to grow good crops.

Look for bargains to cut down on costs. When you purchase organics, there are often discounts.

A third way to save money on meat consumption is to eat less. Because of the amount of feed required to raise livestock, meat production can become expensive.

Organic food is healthier for the planet and our bodies than conventional food, but it's important to not overlook its cost.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

How to buy organic meat even on a tight budget

In this article, I will share my tips and tricks for buying organic meat without having to break the bank.

Here are some tips to help you find low-cost organic meats. Also, how much per pound they cost. You'll learn how to get the best from what you buy.

It doesn't take a lot to eat healthy. Sometimes creativity is required to make money while still eating healthy. Here are some ways you can cut down on food expenses while still getting the best from organic meat.

  1. Buy at wholesale clubs - Costco and Sams Club are great places to shop for bulk foods like chicken breasts and pork chops. If you are fortunate enough to live near one, you may be able get discounts up to 50 lbs on large quantities. This way, you won't waste any meat. You can also freeze the meat if you buy it bulk.
  2. Online shopping is a great way to find meat at a discounted price. Amazon offers Prime Pantry, a weekly deal with free shipping on orders above $35. There are also discounts on lamb steaks (lamb steaks), ground beef, pork loins, and beef roasts. It is easy to browse their website and check out what is on offer at different times.
  3. Look for a local farmer. They usually charge less than big-box retailers, as they don't have to pay large stocking fees. They also know what their animals ate and drink so they can tell exactly what is inside.
  4. Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. Look for the tiniest cuts. These include sirloin, tenderloin, top round, flank, and top-round steaks. These cuts have high protein and low fat.
  5. Try new recipes. You can cut down on your grocery costs by starting to cook with ingredients you don't have before. You'll be surprised at how many delicious dishes can you create using fresh tomatoes.
  6. Be creative with leftovers - If you have leftover cooked meat or poultry, use them for sandwiches, salads, soups, casseroles, etc. For quick lunches, leftover meat can be used to make dinners.

So there you go! This is my list of tips to help you afford organic meat, even if your budget is tight. What other tips do you have? What other tips do you have for me?
