Frequently Asked Questions
What are organic foods?
Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge and confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used. Animal testing is also not done. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.
Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.
What is organic meat exactly?
Organic meat is food that has not been treated with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Organic meat is also a guarantee that the animals weren’t fed any genetically altered feed. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.
Organic meats are good for the environment. When we eat organic foods, we reduce the pollution in landfills, rivers, lakes, etc. Organic farmers don't use harmful chemicals to kill birds and insects, which helps wildlife.
You can eat organic meats and produce whenever you can. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often pass along savings to customers when shopping locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Why should I buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.
The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:
When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies
Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.
Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."
Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

What You Should Know About Organic Foods
Organic foods are those that come from plants or animals, and do not contain any chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or additives. They can be produced without the use of genetic engineering or ionizing radiation. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It should not contain genetically modified animals (GMOs).
When Justus von Liebig, a chemical chemist, coined "organic", which means "life-giving," to describe the properties in manure, the term "organic" was used for the first time. The term organic is often associated with food production. Organic refers to products that only contain naturally occurring substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, which are all found in nature.
In the past decades, the consumption of organic products has grown dramatically worldwide. According to recent statistics, around 50% of the world's population consumes at least one organic product daily. This number is rising and is expected increase to 70%, 90%, and 80% by 2020.
There are many reasons why consumers choose organic products. Organic produce can be preferred for its taste; others prefer them for being healthier. Some people believe organic farming to be more environmentally friendly. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.
Organic foods are usually more expensive than conventional ones, although prices vary depending on countries and regions. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. One factor is the availability of land suitable for organic agriculture. Another is the cost of inputs and labour needed for organic cultivation. The cost of transportation, marketing, and taxes are just a few other factors. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.
