Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic meat healthier?

This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. But here's the rub, organic food is becoming more popular while conventional food continues to fall out of favour.

Organic foods are becoming more popular because they are better for us. Organic products are not only safer for our health but also reduce pollution and waste.

However, there are also two sides to this coin. Organic produce takes more time to grow and requires greater resources. This means that organic food costs more money than its non-organic counterpart.

Organic meats tend to be more expensive than those raised conventionally. However, it is possible to reduce costs without compromising on quality.

Buy locally to save money. Locally grown produce helps to keep the prices down because farmers are given incentives to grow healthy crops.

Look for bargains to cut down on costs. Organics often come with discounts.

You can also save money by eating less meat. Because of the amount of feed required to raise livestock, meat production can become expensive.

There are many reasons why organic food is better for our bodies and the planet, but we should be careful not to overlook the cost.

Why should I choose organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

Are organic foods better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

Why is organic foods important?

Our health is dependent on organic produce. It's the best way to ensure we eat nutritious foods. It's better for us and more sustainable because it doesn’t depend on pesticides or fertilizers.

Organic farming uses natural methods for growing crops without using harmful chemicals. This results in fewer environmental pollutants and makes organic farming safer. Organic food is a way to help the environment and protect yourself.

The benefits of organic food go beyond our health, though. We all know how bad processed food can make us feel. However, organic fruits & vegetables aren’t treated with chemical sprays. It means that organic fruits and vegetables taste better, last longer, and are brighter.

This is why organic food is so important. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

What is organic beef?

Organic meat is food that has not been treated with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. It also means that the animals weren't fed any genetically modified feed. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.

Organic meats are also better for our environment. When we eat organic foods, we reduce the pollution in landfills, rivers, lakes, etc. We also help protect wildlife because organic farmers usually do not use toxic chemicals that kill insects and birds.

You can eat organic meats and produce whenever you can. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often offer discounts to their customers by shopping locally. Buy local to save jobs and not send them overseas.

How can you tell organic food from non-organic?

Fresh ingredients are essential for any chef. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.

This is true for food as well. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. We also know that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic foods are produced without using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified organisms (GMO). These substances aren't permitted for organic farmers.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. You have many options to safely grow them.

Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. This is because organic farming uses less resources than conventional methods but provides enough nutrients for life to last.

Crop rotation, crop rotation, cover cropping and composting manure are all organic farming methods. These techniques can prevent soil erosion, improve water quality, and help reduce the risk of it happening again.

They reduce chemical runoff from waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.

There are two types for organic products certification. One is certified through the USDA National Organic Program and the other by independent certifying agents. Both require strict adherence to organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals may be used to identify organic products that meet federal standards.

Which are the best organic vegetables?

Organic vegetables are the healthiest and most nutritious foods available to humans. They are the best food on earth.

Organic produce is free from pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals pose grave risks for our health and the environment.

Organic produce contains more nutrients, vitamins and minerals. This makes them more healthy because organic produce absorbs nutrients better.

Organic vegetables taste delicious and are safe for you to eat. Organic produce does not have side effects.

Organic fruits and vegetables can be found at all grocery stores. As long as they are produced according to USDA guidelines (which means they meet the standards set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture), they are labelled "organic." If you cannot find organic produce at your local grocery store, check out online retailers such as Amazon or Walmart.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens to the body when you switch over to organic products

Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product is natural and does not contain any harmful substances.

Natural means how food is grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Some people don't believe that natural means healthy. Many experts say there isn't much difference between conventional and organic foods. Both types of food are tested for safety, quality, and purity. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores offer organic options. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.

If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
