Frequently Asked Questions
What are the top organic products?
Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.
Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.
In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.
What is the difference between organic food and inorganic?
Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.
The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. Natural does not always mean organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is more nutritious than traditional produce due to the fact that it contains less harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.
Organic foods are better for us.
According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.
Is organic food healthier?
There are two types: foods that we grow and those that we purchase from others. While there are exceptions, the general answer is yes to both. Organic food is healthier as it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals or pesticides, herbicides and preservatives.
In supermarkets all over North America, Europe Asia, Latin America, Latin America, and Africa, you can find organic food. Organic food is now available in most grocery stores, making it easier to find organic foods.
Organic food is also better tasting and more nutritious because it contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Organics are often grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This means that they do not pollute the soil and water sources.
The USDA regulates organic farming practices. It requires that farmers follow strict guidelines in order to ensure organic produce is safe for consumption. There are more than 30 million acres of US farmland that have been certified organic.
As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. The same amount of nutrients, calories, and protein is being offered by organic food, but consumers are often paying less. Organic farms can charge lower prices for their crops since they aren't required to pay for expensive chemical inputs such as insecticides or fungicides.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), organic food actually costs 10% less per pound. You can make a change to organic food if your family is concerned about their health.
Organic food is a popular choice to traditional American cuisines. While many believe organic food can only come from specialty markets and fine dining restaurants, it is not true. You can easily purchase organic food in regular grocery stores throughout the United States.
In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The market value of organic food in the US was $43 billion in 2012, up from $21 billion in 2007.
