Frequently Asked Questions
Organic meat is better
If you've been paying attention for any time, you probably already know the answer to this question. This is the crux of it: organic food has been growing in popularity while conventional food has fallen out of favor.
Organic foods continue to be popular because they offer a healthier alternative. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.
But there are two sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow and requires more resources to do so. Organic food is more expensive than non-organic.
Organic meats can be more expensive that those from conventionally raised animals. But, you can reduce the cost of organic meats without compromising quality.
Buy local to save money. Locally grown fruits and veggies help to lower prices because farmers get incentives to grow good crops.
Another way to cut costs is to look for deals. There are often discounts offered when purchasing organics.
A third way to save money on meat consumption is to eat less. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.
There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.
Which organic products are most in demand?
Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.
Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to know which foods are popular today and whether trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.
This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
What are the benefits of organic farming?
Organic farming allows farmers to produce food using only natural methods. Farmers don't have worry about whether harmful pesticides are affecting their crops or animals.
Organic farming allows for natural fertilizers to be used. These fertilizers aid in the growth of healthy plants as well as reducing the amount chemical waste.
Organic farming is also sustainable. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This reduces pollutants and conserves precious resources.
As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is because organic farming requires less water to grow the crops.
Organic farming methods can also result in higher prices for farmers' produce. Healthier foods are demanded by consumers who are more aware of the dangers posed by pesticides and chemical fertilisers.
This has increased the demand for organic foods. For these reasons, organic farming is becoming increasingly popular.

How To
What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product was created by nature, and therefore does not contain harmful substances.
The term "natural" refers how food is grown. This term is often used to refer to foods that are not processed into final forms (such as fruits). Natural foods are often more fresh than others, because they haven’t been processed with heat, radiation or chemical preservations. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce has less pesticide residues and pollutant than conventionally grown food.
Most grocery stores now sell organic products. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies only sell organic products, while others offer separate sections. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides have been shown to harm infants and unborn babies.
