Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming uses natural methods to grow crops. Conventional farming uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The National Organic Program Standards require that all organic foods are free of prohibited substances such as antibiotics and growth hormones, genetically modified organisms or industrial solvents. Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.

Organic farming is a natural method of growing crops that uses no harmful chemicals. This makes organic farming safer for both humans and animals. You are helping the planet and yourself by choosing organic food.

The health benefits of organic foods go well beyond our bodies. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. Organic fruits and vegetables aren’t subject to chemicals spray. This means they are more fresh tasting, last longer and look better.

That's why eating organic matters so much. Because organic is healthier for you as well as for the world.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

Statistics
