Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.

Do organic foods offer health benefits?

Although organic foods are not for everyone, they can be very healthy. There are certain health benefits to those who consume organic foods regularly.

Organic food is made without pesticides or herbicides, hormones or genetic engineering. Organic produce is free from harmful chemicals that could cause harm to human health.

Additionally, organic products are less likely to contain additives during processing. Organic products are more nutritious than those made from non-organic ingredients.

Studies have shown organic foods have more nutrients and antioxidants that conventionally grown fruits, vegetables.

While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming promotes soil fertility as well as biodiversity.

This helps preserve water resources and prevents erosion. Plus, because organic farms aren't treated with toxic chemicals, these farms typically require less energy and fuel.

Many people are concerned that organic food is more expensive than regular foods. Prices can vary depending on where you live. For example, organic apples can be more costly than conventional apples.

You'll be able to see the difference in price if you add up all of the fruits in a single basket.

Do you want to go organic?

It depends on you. Organic food is not for you if you don’t like it.

Organic food is available if you are a fan of good food. Organic foods are safer as most commercial growers use chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified species (GMOs) to produce their crops.

Organic agriculture conserves the environment and promotes biodiversity.

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

Statistics

  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

5 Reasons Why You Should Buy Organic Products

Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or irradiated ingredients. Their production methods do not involve sewage sludge or industrial solvents. During the growth process, food is kept clean from any contamination. It does not contain artificial preservatives or additives. There are no hormones and antibiotics used. They are also grown in conditions that ensure they retain their nutritional value for longer periods of time.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals that nonorganic. This means that organic produce is less likely cause allergic reactions and sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizer needs very little water. Organic farms are often located far from areas with high levels of pollution because it takes so much energy for conventional agriculture to grow. This helps reduce pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. Strong immune systems are developed when farm animals only eat grasses and grains that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. Conventional fruits and vegetables often taste bland because they're picked at peak ripeness, then shipped long distances to grocery stores. Organic produce tastes sweeter and more rich because it was picked when it was still young.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs, BPA, and other harmful chemicals are often found in conventional processed foods. These harmful substances can be avoided by sticking to whole foods like meat, eggs, fish and nuts as well as seeds, beans, fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
