Frequently Asked Questions

Why should you buy organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

How can you tell if your produce is organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Freerange - Products made from animals who graze freely and are outdoors.

These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.

  • No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers
  • There are no genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • The animal is never given any hormones
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives

What is organic food?

Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can be harmful for your health.

Organic food is produced naturally and without any harmful substances, such as chemical fertilizers or pesticides. These chemicals may cause damage to animals as well as humans.

Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.

The way that an agricultural product is grown organically is what the term means. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the National Organic Program Standards all organic food must be free of banned materials such as antibiotics growth hormones genetically modified organisms GMOs, and industrial solvents. Organic food must be grown without the use of toxic chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers.

How To

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

Organic foods are made from animals and plants without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They are not subject to genetic engineering or the use of ionizing radioactive radiation. It must not contain any artificial colours, flavour enhancers, flavor enhancers, and preservatives. It must not contain genetically altered organisms (GMOs).

In 1845, Justus Von Liebig, an aspiring chemist and entrepreneur, created the term "organic" to describe the properties found in manure. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic means the product has only natural substances like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are found in nature.

The consumption of organic foods has risen dramatically in the past decades. Recent statistics indicate that approximately half of the world’s population eats at least one organic food per day. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.

There are many factors that consumers choose organic produce. Some consumers prefer organic products for the taste. Other people prefer them because organic produce is more nutritious. Still others believe organic farming is better for the environment. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.

Organic food tends to be more expensive that conventional foods, but prices can vary depending upon the country or region. Organic food prices are affected by many factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another is the cost for inputs and labour required to grow organic crops. Transportation costs, marketing expenses, and taxes are all factors. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.

Below is a summary of the major differences between organic food and conventional food.
