Frequently Asked Questions

Why should organic be my first choice?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

What are some of the benefits of organic agriculture?

Organic farming is a way for farmers to grow food naturally without the use chemicals. Farmers don't have worry about whether harmful pesticides are affecting their crops or animals.

Organic farming allows for natural fertilizers to be used. These fertilizers aid in the growth of healthy plants as well as reducing the amount chemical waste.

Organic farming is also sustainable. To recycle nutrients back into soil, farmers often resort to composting. This reduces the risk of pollution and helps conserve precious resources.

As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is because organic farming requires less water to grow the crops.

Organic production also means that farmers get higher prices for their products. Consumers who are more informed about the dangers of pesticides or chemical fertilizers will demand healthier food.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.

Is organic food healthier?

There are two types, those we grow our own and those we purchase from another source. Although there are exceptions to each category, most of the answers to your question are yes. Organic food is healthier because it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

You can find organic foods in supermarkets across North America. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.

Organic food is better tasting and healthier because it contains more vitamins and minerals. Organics can be grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This ensures that organics do not pollute our soil or water supply.

Organic farming is regulated by the USDA. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to ensure safe eating. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.

Organic food is often more affordable than conventional food. Organic food is often cheaper than conventional food because it contains the same amount calories, protein, as well as nutrients. Organic farms can charge lower prices for their crops since they aren't required to pay for expensive chemical inputs such as insecticides or fungicides.

In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, organic food costs 10 percent less per pound than conventionally produced food. Switching to organic food is a smart move if you care about your health and that of your family.

Organic food is a popular choice to traditional American cuisines. It is often believed that organic food is exclusive to specialty markets and gourmet restaurants. Organic food is readily available at regular grocery stores all across the United States.

The sales of organic food have increased dramatically in recent years. In 2012, the US market value for organic food was $43 Billion. This is an increase of $21 Billion from 2007.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown – Produce that meets strict organic standards but has not received USDA certification.

Pastured/Freerange - Products made from animals who graze freely and are outdoors.

These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.

  • No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • No antibiotics are ever given to the animal
  • Animals are not ever given hormones.
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage solids
  • No GMOs
  • Never was an antibiotic given
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage effluent (if it isn't a GMO).
  • No irradiation

Does organic mean it is pesticide-free?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means that organic food is often free of pesticides and fertilizers.

Organic produce contains more nutrients and is healthier than conventionally manufactured foods, as it does not contain any harmful additives.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) requires farmers to follow strict guidelines for growing crops certified as organic.

These guidelines address soil preparation, crop rotations, pest control, water conservation, harvesting, and other practices.

Organic farming methods also benefit wildlife and natural environments.

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat is real food grown without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or hormones. Organic meat also indicates that animals were not fed genetically modified food. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. Eating organic foods helps reduce pollution in the environment, such as rivers and lakes. We also help protect wildlife because organic farmers usually do not use toxic chemicals that kill insects and birds.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass along savings to customers when shopping locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

How do you know if your food is organic?

Ask any chef and he will tell you that fresh ingredients are the most important thing. This is because eating well makes us feel better.

The same goes for our food. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. We also know that organics were not treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic foods can be made without synthetic pesticides. These substances aren't permitted for organic farmers.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many ways to safely grow organic crops.

Organic farming is often called sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.

Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.

They also reduce chemical pollution of waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.

Two types of certification programs are available for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies the one while the independent certifying agency certifies the other. Both require strict organic standards to be adhered to.

Certified organic products may bear the USDA seal or the symbol O Seal, which indicates that the product meets federal requirements.
