Frequently Asked Questions
What are some of the benefits of organic agriculture?
Organic farming gives farmers the opportunity to grow food without the use of chemical pesticides. Farmers don't need to worry that harmful pesticides could harm their crops or animals.
Organic farming allows for natural fertilizers to be used. These fertilizers are good for plants that are healthy and reduce chemical waste.
Organic farming is also eco-friendly. Farmers often use composting techniques to recycle nutrients back into the soil. This helps to reduce pollution and conserve valuable resources.
As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is because organic agriculture uses less water in the growing season.
Organic production methods mean farmers can get higher prices. Consumers who are more informed about the dangers of pesticides or chemical fertilizers will demand healthier food.
This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.
Why should I choose organic?
The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.
Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies
USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.
Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."
Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.
Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.
Are organic foods better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.
Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.
What is organic meat?
Organic meat is food that has not been treated with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.
Organic meats are good for the environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. We can also help wildlife by eating organic foods. Organic farmers do not often use toxic chemicals that can kill birds or insects.
The best way to ensure that you eat healthy organic meats is to buy them locally whenever possible. Local buying helps to keep money in the community, rather than moving out of state. Local businesses often pass along savings to customers when shopping locally. In addition, buying local keeps jobs right here in America instead of sending them overseas.
