Frequently Asked Questions

What is organic meat?

Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Organic meat is also a guarantee that the animals weren’t fed any genetically altered feed. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are better for the environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

The best way to ensure that you eat healthy organic meats is to buy them locally whenever possible. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Buy local to save jobs and not send them overseas.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." Natural does not always mean organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.

What are some of the benefits of organic agriculture?

Organic farming allows farmers to produce food using only natural methods. The farmers don't have to worry about pesticides causing harm to their crops and animals.

Organic farming also allows for more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers help to grow healthy plants and help to reduce the amount of chemical waste produced.

Organic farming is also beneficial for the environment. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This reduces pollutants and conserves precious resources.

As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.

Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. Consumers who become more aware of the dangers of pesticides and chemical fertilizers demand healthier foods.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is growing in popularity.

What are organic products good for skin?

Organic skincare products are made without synthetic chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, talc, triclosan, titanium dioxide, triethanolamine, vitamin A palmitate, etc.

Organic skincare products don't contain artificial colours or fragrances.

They also help to preserve healthy skin and prevent premature aging.

Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:

  • Paraben Free: These are chemicals that keep certain cosmetic products stable. However, they can be toxic if used in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free means that the product doesn't contain any essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty Free - No animals were injured during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients are ingredients that have been naturally extracted from plants or animals.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian: The ingredients can be either vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-Free is a label that indicates that no gluten was added to the product.
  • Non-Toxic-The product doesn't contain any toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and/or other harmful substances that could be harmful to your health.
  • Biodegradable - The product will eventually be broken down into harmless parts when it is disposed of.
  • Pesticide Free - No pesticides were used during the growing or harvesting processes.
  • GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
  • Certified Organic is a certification that the ingredients of the recipe were grown using sustainable methods.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge and confinement feeding. No growth hormones or animal testing are done. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.

Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.

Why should organic be my first choice?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. Make healthy food choices.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Statistics

  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural conditions and without the use of any artificial inputs like fungicides or herbicides. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
