Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food is free from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and hormones. They contain more nutrients such vitamins A, C. E, and, in some cases, omega-3 oils. These ingredients are good for our bodies as well as the planet.

Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.

While most consumers associate organics with produce, many organic products include dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, personal care items, pet food, and household cleaning supplies.

"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. Farmers cannot use conventional (non-organic) methods to grow these foods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

In addition, the farmer must follow guidelines regarding how much fertilizer and pesticide he uses during the growing season and rotate his fields between various crops. GMOs (genetically modified organisms), synthetic growth hormones and insecticides as well as synthetic fertilizers are prohibited by farmers.

Fruits and vegetables labelled "100% organic" meet all the requirements above. But, not all farms label their produce as 100% organic. It would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

Is organic food healthy?

There are two types. Those we grow or those we get from someone else. While there are exceptions, the general answer is yes to both. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.

There are many supermarkets that sell organic food across North America and Europe. Organic food can now be found in many grocery stores making it easier for shoppers to choose organic products.

Organic food has higher levels vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which makes it more delicious and nutritious. In addition, organics are usually grown without applying synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which means they do not pollute our soil and water supply.

The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are more than 30 million acres of US farmland that have been certified organic.

As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.

According to the Environmental Working Group Organic food is actually 10 percent more expensive per pound than conventionally grown food. You can make a change to organic food if your family is concerned about their health.

Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. Many people believe that organic food can only be found in specialty markets or gourmet restaurants. This is false. You can easily purchase organic food in regular grocery stores throughout the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The market value of organic food in the US was $43 billion in 2012, up from $21 billion in 2007.

What are the top organic products?

Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.

They also tend to have higher prices. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.

These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.

Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.

Pastured/Free Range – Produced from animals that live outdoors and graze on grasses or herbs.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers
  • There are no genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • No hormones are ever given to the animal
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage sludge
  • No GMOs
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge, if it's not a GMO
  • No irradiation

I hope this article has been helpful.

Are organic foods better?

According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.

Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

What happens to your Body When You Switch To Organic Products?

Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are often fresher than others because they haven't been treated with heat, radiation, or chemical preservatives. But, not everyone believes that natural foods are healthy. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. But organic produce has fewer pollutants and pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores offer organic options. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.

If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides can harm unborn infants and babies.
