Frequently Asked Questions
What are organic fruit?
Organic foods do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These ingredients are good for our bodies as well as the planet.
Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are free of harmful chemicals and sewage sludge.
Although organics are most commonly associated with produce, organics can also be found in dairy, meats, poultry, eggs and baked goods.
"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. This means that farmers can't use non-organic methods of growing these foods. They can use approved natural pest control methods such as crop rotation, cover cropping and organic animal feed.
A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.
Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. However, some farms won't claim that their products are 100% organic. This would confuse the consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "
What are the most loved organic products?
The fastest-growing industry is organic food. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.
But they tend to be more expensive. The Organic Food Index was created to address this. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
What is inorganic foods?
Organic food does not use pesticides or fertilizers. These chemicals could cause health problems for those who eat inorganic food.
Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.
Inorganic food includes meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, grains, vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs.
Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.
U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines must be followed when organic food is labeled. According to the National Organic Program Standards all organic food must be free of banned materials such as antibiotics growth hormones genetically modified organisms GMOs, and industrial solvents. Organic food must not contain toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludges.
Is organic the same as pesticide-free?
Organic food is chemical-free and grown without pesticides. This means there is little or no exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides.
Because organic produce is free of harmful additives, it also has more nutrients than conventionally grown foods.
Farmers must follow strict guidelines to grow organic crops under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP).
These guidelines cover soil preparation, crop rotation and pest control. They also include water conservation and harvesting techniques.
Organic farming techniques also contribute to healthy ecosystems that benefit wildlife as well as natural habitats.
What is organic beef?
Organic meat is organic food that has been grown naturally without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or hormones. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.
Organic meats are also better for our environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers don't use harmful chemicals to kill birds and insects, which helps wildlife.
Buy organic meats whenever possible. This is the best way for you to eat healthy, organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.
What are organic food products?
Organic produce does not contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and sewage sludge. It is also grown without irradiation or genetic engineering. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops are allowed natural growth, so farmers don't use chemicals to kill pests and weeds.
Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics are also better for your health as they contain more nutrients that conventional food. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.

How To
Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.
In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.
Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. This represents a 23-percent increase over 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.
While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.
The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
