These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.

Pastured/Freerange - Products made from animals who graze freely and are outdoors.

These labels indicate whether the product meets certain criteria.

What is an organic food producer?

Organic food producers create products that are grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

Organic food production happens on farms where crops have been naturally nurtured. This includes crop rotation, soil preparation, and pest control.

To be organic, an agricultural product must meet the strict criteria of USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

These guidelines will ensure that consumers have safe, healthy, and nutritious food.

Organic foods offer many health benefits. They are free from heavy metal contamination and pesticide residues. They also have higher nutritional content and better taste.

USDA organic products must carry the USDA Certified Organic seal.

This certification means that the product meets the standards laid down by the National Organic Program.

Organic food not only makes us healthier but also helps to protect the environment.

Organic farming methods preserve natural resources, such as water or land. Organic farming techniques also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which contributes to climate change.

Organic agriculture is more sustainable and uses less chemicals.

This improves the air quality by reducing the likelihood of harmful gases like ammonia, nitrates and other pollutants building up in your atmosphere.

There are many types and varieties of organic farming.

Conventional farming involves the use artificial inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides.

Regenerative agriculture uses cover crops and green manures to improve soil quality. It also promotes biodiversity.

Agroecology focuses on sustainable relationships between people, plants, and animals.

Permaculture promotes self-sufficiency through the design of systems that mimic nature.


What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

How to buy organic meat even on a tight budget

In this post I'll share some tips and techniques for buying organic meat that won't break the bank.

You will learn where to buy cheap organic meats, and what they cost per pound. You will be able to make the most of what you have purchased.

For healthy eating, you don’t have to spend a lot. Sometimes, it takes a bit of creativity to save money while eating well. Here are some ways you can cut down on food expenses while still getting the best from organic meat.

  1. Buy at wholesale clubs - Costco and Sams Club are great places to shop for bulk foods like chicken breasts and pork chops. If you're lucky enough to live near one of these stores, you can often get deals on large quantities of meat (up to 50 pounds). This ensures that meat is not wasted. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. Amazon, for example, offers Prime Pantry, a weekly deal that includes free shipping on orders greater than $35 They offer discounts for beef roasts and ground beef as well as lamb steaks, lamb steaks, pork loins, and other items. It's easy to browse their website and see what's available at different times.
  3. Local farmers often charge less than big box retailers due to the fact that they don't have large overheads for stocking their shelves. They also know what their animals ate and drink so they can tell exactly what is inside.
  4. Look for meat cuts that are leanest - Lean meat is generally cheaper to cook than fatty meat. The leanest cuts are therefore preferred. The most commonly used cuts include flank steak, tenderloin and top round steaks. These cuts have high protein and low fat.
  5. Try new recipes. Cooking with new ingredients is one of the best ways to cut your grocery bills. You may be surprised by how many delicious dishes you can come up with using fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, olive oil, and spices.
  6. Be creative with leftovers - If you have leftover cooked meat or poultry, use them for sandwiches, salads, soups, casseroles, etc. Remaining meat can be used for quick lunches or dinners.
