What are some of the most popular organic products in your country?
Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.
This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
What is an organic food manufacturer?
Organic food producers make products that are organically grown. These foods include fruits and vegetables, grains, as well as dairy products.
When crops are naturally nurtured, organic food production can be achieved. This includes soil preparation, pest control, and crop rotation.
The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), must set strict criteria for organic agricultural products.
These guidelines are designed to ensure consumers have access to safe, healthy and nutritious food.
Organic foods offer many health benefits. They are free from heavy metal contamination and pesticide residues. They also have higher nutritional content and better taste.
USDA organic products must carry the USDA Certified Organic seal.
This certification means that the product meets standards established by the National Organic Program.
As well as ensuring that we eat healthier, organic food also helps protect our environment.
Organic farming techniques preserve water and land. Organic farming also helps to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, which are responsible for climate change.
Organic agriculture uses less chemicals and reduces the amount of pollution runoff.
This improves the air quality by reducing the likelihood of harmful gases like ammonia, nitrates and other pollutants building up in your atmosphere.
There are many types and varieties of organic farming.
Conventional farming involves the use artificial inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides.
Regenerative farming uses compost, cover crops, green manures, and other methods to improve the soil's health. It encourages biodiversity.
Agroecology emphasizes sustainable relationships between people and plants.
Permaculture promotes self sufficiency through the creation of systems that imitate nature.
Why should I buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:
When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies
USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.
Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."
Always read the ingredient lists. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.
Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.
Statistics
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
- Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
- Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To
Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.
Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.
There are two types available in the U.S. for producers who want their products to be labeled "organic". One for farmers and ranchers, and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.
Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.
The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
