According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic food is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

5 Reasons to buy organic products

Organic foods do not use pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production processes do not include sewage or industrial solvents. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is completely free from artificial preservatives, additives, and other harmful chemicals. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. They are also grown in conditions that ensure they retain their nutritional value for longer periods of time.

  1. Health benefits. Nonorganic produce has more chemicals than organic. Organic produce is healthier. This makes it less likely to cause allergies or sensitivities. You also consume fewer toxic substances and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizer requires very little water. Organic farms are typically located far away form areas of high pollution and where conventional growth is difficult because it requires so much effort. This helps reduce pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility, rather than chemical fertilisers. This results in healthier soils and higher levels organic matter.
