Frequently Asked Questions

Organic means it is free from pesticides?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means organic food is free from pesticides and fertilizers.

Because it is free from harmful additives, organic produce has higher nutritional value than conventionally produced food.

The USDA National Organic Program, (NOP), requires farmers to adhere to strict guidelines when cultivating organic crops.

These guidelines include soil preparation and crop rotation, pest management, water conservation, as well as harvesting practices.

Organic farming methods are also beneficial for wildlife and natural habitats.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

Why should I choose organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Which are the best organic vegetables?

Organic vegetables are the healthiest and most nutritious foods available to humans. They are considered the healthiest food on Earth.

Organic produce is produced without pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals can be dangerous to our environment as well as our health.

Organic produce also contains more nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, enzymes, fibre, and essential fatty acids. This makes them healthier because we absorb these nutrients better when eating organics.

Organic vegetables are delicious and safe to eat. Consuming organic produce has no known side effects.

Any grocery store can sell organic fruits and vegetables. They can be labeled organic if they are grown according to USDA guidelines.

What is organic food?

Organic food is not produced with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Inorganic foods contain these chemicals, which may cause health problems.

Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals may cause damage to animals as well as humans.

Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.

Organic refers specifically to the method an agricultural product has been grown. Organic farming, for example, uses natural methods and soil amendments in order to grow crops. Conventional farming, however, uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

Organic foods must comply with strict guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The National Organic Program Standards require that all organic foods are free of prohibited substances such as antibiotics and growth hormones, genetically modified organisms or industrial solvents. Organic food must not contain toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludges.

Statistics

How To

Five Reasons to Purchase Organic Products

Organic foods are grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They don't contain any genetically modified organisms or irradiated foods. Their production methods do not involve sewage sludge or industrial solvents. During the course of its growth cycle, the natural environment of the food is protected from contamination. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics. They are also produced in conditions that enable them to preserve their nutritional value, freshness, and quality for longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals than nonorganic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. This also means that you are consuming less toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without synthetic fertilizer and pesticides requires very little water. Organic farms are typically located far away form areas of high pollution and where conventional growth is difficult because it requires so much effort. This helps to reduce the amount of air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies less on chemical fertilizers and more on soil fertility. This results with healthier soils with greater organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. Farm animals develop strong immune systems when they eat only grasses/grains raised without adding hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. Due to being picked at peak quality, vegetables and fruits are often bland. Because it was picked while still unripe, organic produce is richer and more flavorful.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs, BPA, and other harmful chemicals are often found in conventional processed foods. Stick to whole foods, including meat, eggs fish, nuts seeds, beans and fruit.
