The benefits of organic food go beyond our health, though. We all know how unhealthy processed foods can make us feel. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. This means they are more fresh tasting, last longer and look better.

It's because organic is healthy for you and the planet. Organic food is not only healthier for you but also for the whole world.

Why should I buy organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

How can you tell organic food from non-organic?

Fresh ingredients are essential for any chef. We feel better when our food is good.

The same is true of our food. We know where our organic food came from and how it has been grown. We also know that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic food does not contain synthetic pesticides, fertilers, hormones or antibiotics. These substances are forbidden for organic farmers.

There is no art in growing organic crops. There are many safe ways to grow them.

Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. This means that organic farming does not use as many resources as conventional methods, but it still provides the essential nutrients needed to sustain life.

Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These techniques reduce soil erosion and increase water quality.

They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.

There are two types for organic products certification. The USDA National Organic Program certifies the one while the independent certifying agency certifies the other. Both require strict compliance with organic standards.

USDA seals and O Seals are symbols that indicate organic certification.

Is organic food better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.

What are organic fruits?

Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These ingredients are good for our bodies as well as the planet.

Organic foods are grown with sustainable agricultural practices that help to preserve soil quality, and increase biological diversity. They are free of harmful chemicals and sewage sludge.

Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.

"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. This means that farmers can't use non-organic methods of growing these foods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.

Further, the farmer must be careful about the amount of pesticide and fertilizer he uses in the growing season. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. But, not all farms label their produce as 100% organic. It would confuse consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.

Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.

How To

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require that operations are audited annually to verify compliance with the strict standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Groceries sales increased by 12 per cent during this time. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
