Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference?

Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods may be grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

Why should you buy organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Always read the ingredient lists. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

How do you know if your food is organic?

Ask any chef and he will tell you that fresh ingredients are the most important thing. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.

This holds true for our food. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. We also know that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). These substances are not allowed for organic farmers.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many methods to safely grow them.

Sustainable agriculture is sometimes called organic farming. This means that while it uses fewer resources than conventional methods, it provides the necessary nutrients to sustain life.

Organic farming practices include crop rotation, composting manure, cover cropping, and intercropping. These techniques help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.

They reduce chemical runoff from waterways. Because most people live in urban areas, it is easy to find farms that grow organic produce.

There are two types of certification programs for organic products. One is certified by the USDA National Organic Program, and the other is certified by independent certifying agencies. Both require strict organic standards to be adhered to.

USDA seals, or O Seals, may be attached to certified organic products. These symbols indicate that the product meets federal requirements.

How do I find out if my produce's organic?

These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce

USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free Range - Produce from animals who live outdoors and graze freely on grass and herbs.

These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.

  • No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • The animal is never given antibiotics
  • Animals are not ever given hormones.
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • There is no sewage sludge
  • GMOs not allowed
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge (if it's a non-GMO)
  • No irradiation

What are organic beauty products?

Organic Beauty Products are natural products without synthetic chemicals such as petroleum, parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, and artificial preservatives. These ingredients are found in most conventional beauty products, including cosmetics, perfumes, shampoos, etc.

Organic beauty products don't contain genetically modified organisms and are therefore free from animal testing.

The USDA defines organic production as "a system of production which fosters the cycle of resources" and it has been used since decades to refer to foods grown without pesticides.

The harmful effects of chemical compounds on our bodies have led to an increase in the demand for ecofriendly beauty products.

These include cancer, allergies and skin irritation.

Organic beauty companies are committed to creating healthy and safe products for consumers while protecting the environment.

How To

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.

The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
