Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products will be the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.
These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.
Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
Is organic food better for us?
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.
Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products
Organic foods do not use pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They contain no genetically modified or irradiated food ingredients. They are not made with sewage sludge, industrial solvents, or any other chemical substances. During the course of its growth cycle, the natural environment of the food is protected from contamination. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. No hormones or antibiotics are used. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce is more chemically-laden than organic. This means it's less likely to cause allergies and sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizer requires very little water. Because it takes so much energy to grow conventionally, organic farms tend to be located far away from urban areas where there's plenty of pollution. This helps reduce pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming relies less on chemical fertilizers and more on soil fertility. This results with healthier soils with greater organic matter. The rotation of crops and the letting of land fallow can improve soil health.
