Frequently Asked Questions

What are the top organic products?

Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.

However, they are also more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.

What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is more nutritious than traditional produce due to the fact that it contains less harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

What are the health benefits of organic farming

Organic farming gives farmers the opportunity to grow food without the use of chemical pesticides. Farmers don't have worry about whether harmful pesticides are affecting their crops or animals.

Organic farming can also use natural fertilizers. These fertilizers can be used to help grow healthier plants and to reduce the amount produced chemical waste.

Organic farming is also beneficial for the environment. To recycle nutrients back into soil, farmers often resort to composting. This reduces pollution and preserves valuable resources.

Organic farming can increase crop yields and help the environment. This is because organic agriculture uses less water in the growing season.

Organic production methods mean farmers can get higher prices. Consumers who are more aware about the dangers associated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other chemicals will choose healthier foods.

This increases demand for organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.

Do organic foods offer health benefits?

Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. They can be beneficial for your health if you eat them often.

Organic food is free from artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides as well as hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.

The use of additives in the processing process is also less common. You're more likely to eat organic products than you are non-organic.

Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.

While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming promotes soil fertility as well as biodiversity.

This helps protect against erosion and conserve water resources. Organic farms don't use toxic chemicals and require less fuel and energy.

People are worried that organic foods may be more expensive then conventional. Prices will vary depending where you live. For example, organic apples can be more costly than conventional apples.

But if you look at the total price of a basket of both types of fruit, you'll see that buying organic is cheaper.

So should you go organic?

It all depends upon who you are. It doesn't matter if organic food isn't for you.

You can still buy organic food if your preference is for good tasting food. And since most commercial growers use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), organic foods are safer for consumers.

Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.

How To

Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

There are two types available in the U.S. for producers who want their products to be labeled "organic". One for farmers and ranchers, and one for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
