Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

What are organic beauty products?

Organic Beauty Products don't contain synthetic chemicals such as parabens. These ingredients are commonly found in conventional beauty products like cosmetics, shampoos, and perfumes.

Organic beauty products do not require animal testing and are free of genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The USDA defines organic food as "a system which fosters cycle of resources"; it has been used for decades by the USDA to describe foods that are grown without pesticides.

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for eco-friendly beauty products because of the harmful effects of chemical substances on our bodies.

These include allergies, cancer, skin irritation, hormonal imbalance, early aging, and skin irritation.

Organic beauty companies are committed to creating healthy and safe products for consumers while protecting the environment.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.

USDA Organic Certified: Produces certified by USDA as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free Range - Produce from animals who live outdoors and graze freely on grass and herbs.

These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.

  • No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
  • There are no genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage sludge
  • GMOs banned
  • No antibiotics ever given
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drug
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge, if it's not a GMO
  • No irradiation

Do organic foods offer health benefits?

Even though organic foods might not be for everyone, there are some health benefits. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.

Organic food does not contain artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It also doesn't contain fungicides. Organic produce is produced without the use of harmful chemicals which could affect human health.

The use of additives in the processing process is also less common. Organic products are more nutritious than those made from non-organic ingredients.

Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.

While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps conserve water resources and protects against erosion. Organic farms don't use toxic chemicals and require less fuel and energy.

Many people are concerned that organic food is more expensive than regular foods. However, prices can vary depending upon where you live. For example, organic apples tend to be more expensive than traditional apples.

However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.

Do you want to go organic?

It all depends on who you are. You shouldn't bother if you don't enjoy organic food.

Organic food is available if you are a fan of good food. Organic foods are safer as most commercial growers use chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified species (GMOs) to produce their crops.

Organic agriculture conserves the environment and promotes biodiversity.

Which organic vegetables are the best?

Organic vegetables are the best and most nutritious food source. They are the healthiest of all foods.

Organic produce is grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and GMO seeds. These chemicals can be dangerous to our environment as well as our health.

Organic produce also contains higher levels of nutrients, vitamins. minerals, antioxidants. phytonutrients. enzymes. fibre. Essential fatty acids. Because we absorb these nutrients better from organic foods, this makes them healthier.

Organic vegetables taste delicious and are safe for you to eat. Organic produce is free from known side effects.

Any grocery store can sell organic fruits and vegetables. They can be labeled organic if they are grown according to USDA guidelines.

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Organic products must also be free from banned substances, such as pesticides residues, growth hormones and irradiation.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.

The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
