Frequently Asked Questions
What are organic fruit?
Organic foods do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. Organic foods also have more nutrients such as vitamins C, E and K plus omega-3 fatty acid. Organic food is better for the earth and our bodies because of these healthy ingredients.
Organic foods are produced with sustainable farming practices that promote soil quality and biological diversity. They are free of harmful chemicals and sewage sludge.
While most consumers associate organics with produce, many organic products include dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, personal care items, pet food, and household cleaning supplies.
"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. These foods cannot be grown by farmers using conventional methods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.
A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.
The requirements for organic fruits and vegetables are met if they are labeled 100 percent organic. But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "
Why should I buy organic?
Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:
As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables
USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.
Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."
Always read the ingredient lists. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.
Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.
Organic foods are better for us.
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.
What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products
Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'
When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.
Why is organic produce important?
Organic produce is important for our health. It is the best option to ensure that we eat nutritious food. It is healthier for us than any pesticides or fertilizers and it is also more eco-friendly.
Organic farming uses natural methods for growing crops without using harmful chemicals. This results in fewer environmental pollutants and makes organic farming safer. When you choose organic food, both you and the earth are protected.
The health benefits of organic foods go well beyond our bodies. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. It means that organic fruits and vegetables taste better, last longer, and are brighter.
Because of this, organic foods are so important. Organic food is not only healthier for you but also for the whole world.
Is organic meat healthier?
You probably know the answer if you have been paying attention for a while. However, the truth is organic food is gaining popularity at a time when conventional food is falling out of favor.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.
There are many sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow and requires more resources to do so. Organic food is more expensive than non-organic.
Organic meats can be more expensive that those from conventionally raised animals. However, there are ways to reduce these costs without sacrificing quality.
Buy local to save money. Locally grown fruit and vegetables help lower the price of produce, as farmers are often given incentives to grow better crops.
A great way to save money is to search for deals. You may be able to get discounts when you buy organics.
A third way to save money on meat consumption is to eat less. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.
There are many reasons why organic food is better for our bodies and the planet, but we should be careful not to overlook the cost.

How To
What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and genetic manipulation. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.
The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. This term is often used to refer to foods that are not processed into final forms (such as fruits). Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts believe there is no difference in organic and conventional food. Both types have been tested for quality and safety. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.
In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.
You should avoid eating these items if you are pregnant or nursing. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
