What are the top organic products?
Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.
They also tend to have higher prices. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.
How can you tell if food is organic?
If you ask any chef, he'll tell you there's nothing more important than fresh ingredients. That's because when we eat well, we feel better.
This holds true for our food. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. We also know it was not treated using harmful chemicals.
Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). These substances are not permitted to organic farmers.
But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many methods to safely grow them.
Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. This means that organic farming does not use as many resources as conventional methods, but it still provides the essential nutrients needed to sustain life.
Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.
They also reduce chemical runoff into waterways. Because most people live in urban areas, it is easy to find farms that grow organic produce.
There are two types of certification programs for organic products. One is certified through the USDA National Organic Program and the other by independent certifying agents. Both require strict organic standards to be adhered to.
USDA seals or O Seals can be applied to organic products. This symbol indicates that the product meets federal requirements.

How To
Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?
Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.
In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.
Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.
The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.
Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
