Frequently Asked Questions

Are organic meats better?

This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. This is the crux of it: organic food has been growing in popularity while conventional food has fallen out of favor.

Organic foods continue rising in popularity because they are healthier. Organic foods are also safer for our overall health and reduce pollution.

There are two sides to the coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow and requires more resources to do so. Organic food can be more expensive than its nonorganic counterpart.

Organic meats are generally more expensive than conventionally raised animals. However, there are ways to reduce these costs without sacrificing quality.

One way to save money is to buy locally. Buy locally grown vegetables and fruits to help keep prices low. Farmers receive incentives to grow healthier crops.

Another way to cut costs is to look for deals. Organics often come with discounts.

A third way to save money on meat consumption is to eat less. Meat production can be costly due to the feed needed to raise livestock.

While there are many reasons organic food is better for our bodies as well as the planet, we must not forget the cost.

What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

What are the benefits of organic products for skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.

Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:

  • Paraben Free – These chemicals are used to preserve certain cosmetic products, but can cause serious health problems if taken in large amounts.
  • Fragrance-Free – The product does not contain essential oils or perfumes.
  • Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
  • Vegetarian/Vegetarian- The ingredients are either vegan/vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
  • Non-Toxic - The product doesn't contain toxins, carcinogens, or other dangerous compounds that could harm your health.
  • Biodegradable - the product will break down into harmless components when discarded.
  • Pesticide-Free: No pesticides used during growing or harvesting.
  • GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
  • Certified Organic means all ingredients were grown in ways that preserve the soil, water and air.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. You may also find products that are labeled as "natural", which could contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

What are organic fruit?

Organic food is free from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and hormones. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are produced with sustainable farming practices that promote soil quality and biological diversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.

Organics are often associated with produce. However, organic products can include dairy, meat, poultry and eggs as well as personal care items and pet food.

The USDA defines "organic" as that crops being raised according to strict rules set forth by federal government standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. However, they can use approved organic pest control methods like crop rotation and covering cropping or animal feed made with organic materials.

Additionally, the farmer must adhere to guidelines concerning the amount of fertilizer and pesticide that he uses during the growing seasons and how he rotates his fields among various crops. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

All the above requirements are met by vegetables and fruits that are labeled "100% Organic". But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. They will instead label their product "made with organic ingredients." "

How To

5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products

Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production processes do not include sewage or industrial solvents. The food's natural environment is protected from contamination during its growth cycle. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. There is no use of antibiotics or hormones. They are also produced in conditions that enable them to preserve their nutritional value, freshness, and quality for longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals than nonorganic. This makes it less likely to cause allergies or sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. This helps to reduce air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies less on chemical fertilizers and more on soil fertility. This results with healthier soils with greater organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. Farm animals develop strong immune systems when they eat only grasses/grains raised without adding hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Organic produce is sweeter and richer because it was harvested at the peak of its ripeness.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs are harmful chemicals found in many conventional processed foods. If you want to avoid these, stick to whole foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, beans, fruit, veggies, and herbs.
