Frequently Asked Questions
What are my top priorities when buying organic products
USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.
Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.
Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.
How can I determine if my produce was organic?
These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.
USDA Organic Certified: Produces certified by USDA as 100% organic.

- There are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
- No genetically modified organisms
- No antibiotics are ever given to the animal
- Animals are not ever given hormones.
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- No sewage effluent
- No GMOs
- No antibiotics ever given
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting medications
- No feed-additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No sewage sludge, if it's not a GMO
- No irradiation

Organic foods are better for us.
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.
Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.
What is organic meat?
Organic meat refers to real food grown without the use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or hormones. This also means that animals weren't given any genetically modified feed. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.
Organic meats are better for the environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.
Buy organic meats whenever possible. This is the best way for you to eat healthy, organic meats. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.
How can you tell organic food from non-organic?
Fresh ingredients are essential for any chef. This is because eating well makes us feel better.
This holds true for our food. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. We also know that it wasn't treated with harmful chemicals.
Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). These substances aren't permitted for organic farmers.
But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are plenty of ways to grow them safely.
Sustainable agriculture is sometimes called organic farming. This means that while it uses fewer resources than conventional methods, it provides the necessary nutrients to sustain life.
Organic farming practices include crop rotation, composting manure, cover cropping, and intercropping. These practices help to prevent soil erosion and improve water purity.
They reduce chemical runoff from waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.
Two types of organic product certification programs exist. The USDA National Organic Program certifies the one while the independent certifying agency certifies the other. Both require strict adherence of organic standards.
USDA seals and O Seals are symbols that indicate organic certification.

How To
Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.
In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.
In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.
While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.
While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
