Frequently Asked Questions

Why should organic be my first choice?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

What are organic products for the skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products don't contain artificial colours or fragrances.

They also have the ability to support healthy skin, prevent premature ageing, promote healing after injuries and overall well-being.

These are some standard terms you might come across when shopping for organic items:

  • Paraben Free- These are chemicals that help to keep certain cosmetics stable. But, they can also be toxic if taken in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free means that the product doesn't contain any essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty Free - No animals were injured during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients are ingredients that have been naturally extracted from plants or animals.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian: The ingredients can be either vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-Free is a label that indicates that no gluten was added to the product.
  • Non-Toxic - The product doesn't contain toxins, carcinogens, or other dangerous compounds that could harm your health.
  • Biodegradable product - when thrown out, the product will disintegrate into harmless components.
  • Pesticide Free – There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
  • GMO-Free is a declaration that the product does not contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic means that all the ingredients have been grown using methods that protect the soil and water as well as wildlife and farmers.

What are the health benefits of organic farming

Organic farming offers farmers a method of growing food that doesn't require the use of chemicals. Farmers do not need to worry about harmful pesticides harming their crops or animals.

Organic farming can also use natural fertilizers. These fertilizers can be used to help grow healthier plants and to reduce the amount produced chemical waste.

Organic farming is also sustainable. Many farmers use composting methods to replenish soil nutrients. This helps to reduce pollution and conserve valuable resources.

Organic farming is good for the environment and increases crop yields. This is due to the fact that organic farming uses much less water during growth season.

Organic production also means that farmers get higher prices for their products. Consumers who are more informed about the dangers of pesticides or chemical fertilizers will demand healthier food.

This leads to a greater demand for organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

Is organic food better for us?

The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

What are the top organic products?

Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.

The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. This represents a 23-percent increase over 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
