Frequently Asked Questions

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat is organic food that has been grown naturally without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or hormones. Organic meat also indicates that animals were not fed genetically modified food. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are healthier for our environment. We reduce the amount of pollution in our rivers, lakes, and landfills by eating organic food. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass down savings to customers when they shop locally. Buy local to save jobs and not send them overseas.

Why should you buy organic?

The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. Make healthy food choices.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Are organic foods good for your health?

While organic foods may not be suitable for everyone's health, they are healthy for some people. But for those who eat them regularly, there are definite health benefits.

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides herbicides fungicides hormones antibiotics or genetic engineering. Organic produce is produced without the use of harmful chemicals which could affect human health.

The use of additives in the processing process is also less common. You're more likely to eat organic products than you are non-organic.

Studies have shown that organic fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients than those grown conventionally.

While organic farming is more expensive than traditional farming, it often produces better results. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps to prevent erosion and conserve water resources. Organic farms don't use toxic chemicals and require less fuel and energy.

People are worried that organic foods may be more expensive then conventional. Prices can vary depending on where you live. For example, organic apples are generally more expensive than conventional apples.

However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.

Do you want to go organic?

It depends on you. If you don't like the taste of organic food, then you probably shouldn't bother.

You can purchase organic food if it is delicious. And since most commercial growers use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), organic foods are safer for consumers.

Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.

Statistics

  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

What happens to your body if you switch to organic products

Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. The term "organic" means they do not contain any chemicals or additives. This product was produced by nature and therefore contains no harmful substances.

Natural means how food is grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Natural doesn't necessarily have to be healthy, however. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores offer organic options. You can find organic meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood at your local market. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified. Biodynamic Association Certified. Rainforest Alliance Certified.

You should avoid eating these items if you are pregnant or nursing. Unborn babies and infants can be affected by pesticides.
