Is organic food better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

Which organic vegetables are best?

Organic vegetables are the highest quality and healthiest food source. They are the best food on earth.

Organic produce is organically grown without pesticides. These chemicals can pose serious risks to our environment and health.

Organic produce also has more nutrients, vitamins minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients. They also contain more fibre, essential fatty acids, enzymes, fiber, and enzymes. Because we absorb these nutrients better from organic foods, this makes them healthier.

Organic vegetables are delicious and safe to eat. Consuming organic produce has no known side effects.

All grocery stores can carry organic produce. Organic produce can be found at any grocery store as long as it is produced in accordance with USDA guidelines. This means that they must meet the standards established by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Why should organic be my first choice?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.

How To

5 Reasons to buy organic products

Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production processes do not include sewage or industrial solvents. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is free of preservatives as well as artificial additives. There are no hormones and antibiotics used. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains less chemicals that nonorganic. This means it's less likely to cause allergies and sensitivities. It also means you're consuming fewer toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without synthetic fertilizer and pesticides requires very little water. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. This helps to reduce air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility rather than chemical fertilizers; this results in healthier soils with higher levels of organic matter. Soil health improves when farmers rotate crops and leave land fallow periodically. Strong immune systems are developed when farm animals only eat grasses and grains that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. Conventional fruits and vegetables often taste bland because they're picked at peak ripeness, then shipped long distances to grocery stores. Organic produce tastes richer and sweeter because it was harvested while still unripe.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs and BPA can be found in many processed foods. Stick to whole foods, including meat, eggs fish, nuts seeds, beans and fruit.
