Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most popular organic products?
Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.
Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
However, they are also more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.
According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
Are organic foods better?
According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?
USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.
When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.
You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How To
Organic Foods: What You Need to Know
Organic foods are those that come from plants or animals, and do not contain any chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or additives. They can be produced without the use of genetic engineering or ionizing radiation. Food must not contain artificial colours, flavour enhancers or preservatives. It must not contain genetically altered organisms (GMOs).
In 1845, Justus von Liebig, a chemist, first coined the term "organic", meaning "life-giving", to describe the properties and characteristics of manure. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.
In the past decades, the consumption of organic products has grown dramatically worldwide. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.
There are many reasons that organic products are chosen by consumers. Some consumers prefer organic products for the taste. Other people prefer them because organic produce is more nutritious. Still others believe organic farming is better for the environment. Non-organic products are often chosen because they do not pose ethical issues regarding the treatment of farm workers or animals.
While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. There are different factors influencing the price of organic food. One factor is whether there are enough land available for organic farming. Another is the cost for inputs and labour required to grow organic crops. Transportation costs, marketing expenses, and taxes are all factors. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.
