How To
Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.
Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.
For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Groceries sales increased by 12 per cent during this time. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.
Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.
Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
