The organic label is ubiquitous in supermarkets, farmers markets and patchouli-scented health-food stores. But what does it mean?

Some research suggests that choosing organic foods may reduce cancer risk. But more human data is needed. Eating a healthy diet is still the best way to lower your prostate cancer risk.

High in Fruits and Vegetables

Eating organic can give you a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables that provide cancer-fighting nutrients. These vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals can boost your immune system to fight off prostate cancer cells, or at least neutralize them.

In a recent study, people who reported eating the most organic food had a lower risk of cancer than those who reported the lowest organic food consumption. Participants provided detailed information about how often they ate 16 types of foods, and the researchers took into account other known risk factors for cancer, such as family history of the disease, income, smoking status and physical activity.

Try adding fruits and vegetables to your diet every day, including dark greens, red and orange veggies (especially tomatoes), yellow-orange foods, purple and blue-purple foods, and white foods like cauliflower (rich in sulforaphane). You can get lots of variety by shopping at local farmers’ markets, where you may find less common produce and learn about how the food is grown.

Low in Fat

Eating a healthy diet is important for lowering your cancer risk. You should limit red meat and instead focus on chicken and fish. Consuming more vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower can also lower your prostate cancer risk.

Certain fish, such as salmon and sardines, contain omega-3 fatty acids that can reduce your risk of prostate cancer because these fats are good for the prostate. These fats can help prevent inflammation and suppress the growth of new cells that can become tumors.

Tomatoes, watermelon and other red fruits and vegetables provide a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Studies have shown that men who eat canned and cooked tomatoes five to six times per week have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer.

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural conditions and without the use of any artificial inputs like fungicides or herbicides. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
