Eating organic food can reduce your exposure to pesticide residues. But the French study published this week doesn’t prove that it prevents cancer.

Researchers followed 70,000 adults, mostly women, for five years and assessed their diets. Those who reported eating organic foods most often were 25 percent less likely to develop post-menopausal breast cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Pesticides

Many studies have shown a link between exposure to pesticides and some cancers. Cohort studies (following a group of people over time) have found increased rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia, particularly in farmers, pesticide applicators, and gardeners. Other studies have linked residential pesticide exposure to breast, brain, and prostate cancer.[12]

Children are at particular risk from pesticide exposure. Girls exposed to the pesticide DDT in the womb are five times more likely to develop breast cancer by middle age. And boys exposed to DDT in the womb are twice as likely to develop leukemia later in life.

Organic foods are grown or produced using methods that do not allow for the use of most synthetic pesticides and herbicides, genetically modified crops, ionizing radiation or sewage sludge. However, the pesticides used in conventional farming can still be absorbed by the plant and transferred to the food we eat. Washing, peeling and removing outer leaves can decrease contaminant levels but does not remove all chemicals.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

GMOs are crops that have been modified to include special traits. Some have been genetically engineered to be resistant to diseases that typically wipe out crops. Others have been altered to provide nutrients that are lacking in traditional crops. Some examples are bananas that produce human vaccines against infectious diseases, golden rice with higher levels of vitamin A, and other plants enhanced to survive harsh weather conditions.

Unnatural combinations of genes are created when scientists splice one gene from a different species into another, creating a new organism that does not naturally exist. These spliced genes may contain allergy triggers or have unintended consequences that could affect humans and other living things.

Scientists also modify animals to add desired traits, such as increased milk production or resistance to disease. Genetically modified animal products are relatively new, and their long-term safety has yet to be established. In addition, toxins from these animals may be passed on to people who consume them.

Antibiotics

Many studies have shown that antibiotic use increases your risk of developing cancer. One study even showed that women with triple-negative breast cancer who had multiple courses of antibiotics within three years after their diagnosis were more likely to die from their disease.

Researchers analyzed data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), which is one of the largest databases in the world containing anonymized medical records and drug prescribing. Researchers compared CPRD data for over two million patients with early-onset colorectal cancer to data from the UK National Bowel Cancer Audit (NBCA) and found that a history of antibiotics increased the risk of colon cancer.

The effect was more pronounced in patients aged 50 years, although it did not differ by tumour location or the type of antibiotics used. The results suggest that antibiotics may play a role in the genesis of CRC and should be taken into account for the development of future therapies.

Radiation

Ionizing radiation is used in many ways to improve the quality of life for both people and animals, from medical imaging to nuclear energy. But it can also cause cancer. Radiation is absorbed by DNA and can lead to mutations that may increase the risk of developing cancer years down the road.

Are organic foods healthier?
