Frequently Asked Questions

Are organic foods healthy?

There are two types, those we grow our own and those we purchase from another source. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is healthier than conventional food because it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, pesticides or herbicides. It also doesn’t contain preservatives or genetically modified organisms.

You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Organic food can now be found in many grocery stores making it easier for shoppers to choose organic products.

Organic food is healthier and tastes better because it contains more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Organics are often grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This means that they do not pollute the soil and water sources.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices and requires farmers to follow strict guidelines to ensure that organic produce is safe to eat. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.

Organic food is often cheaper than traditional food. The same amount of nutrients, calories, and protein is being offered by organic food, but consumers are often paying less. Organic farms are free to charge less for their crops, as they don't need to pay expensive chemical inputs such insecticides orfungicides.

According to Environmental Working Group, organic food can be 10 percent cheaper per pound when compared to conventionally produced food. If you care about the health of yourself and your family, consider switching to organic food.

Organic food has become a popular alternative to standard American diets. It is often believed that organic food is exclusive to specialty markets and gourmet restaurants. Organic food is easily available in all regular grocery stores in the United States.

The sales of organic food have increased dramatically in recent years. In 2012, the US market value for organic food was $43 Billion. This is an increase of $21 Billion from 2007.

What are the advantages of organic farming?

Organic farming offers farmers a method of growing food that doesn't require the use of chemicals. Organic farming is a way for farmers to produce food without using harmful pesticides.

Organic farming allows for natural fertilizers to be used. These fertilizers aid in the growth of healthy plants as well as reducing the amount chemical waste.

Organic farming is also beneficial for the environment. Many farmers use composting methods to replenish soil nutrients. This reduces pollutants and conserves precious resources.

As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.

Organic production methods also mean that farmers receive higher prices for their produce. Consumers who are more aware about the dangers associated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other chemicals will choose healthier foods.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. For these reasons, organic farming is becoming increasingly popular.

What are some of the most popular organic products in your country?

Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • To provide the highest quality products and services to every customer, with a dedicated workforce that puts the customer first and takes the extra step to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and loyalty. (hollinsorganic.com)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens to the body when you switch over to organic products

Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They are free-range and come from clean water sources. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. Natural doesn't necessarily have to be healthy, however. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types of food are tested for safety, quality, and purity. Organic produce is safer than conventionally produced produce.

Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified. Biodynamic Association Certified. Rainforest Alliance Certified.

These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Unborn babies and infants can be affected by pesticides.
