Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?

Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiated foods are those that have been exposed to radiation. Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are created using biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Groupโ€™s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didnโ€™t. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

What are the benefits of organic products for skin?

Organic skincare products are made without synthetic chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, talc, triclosan, titanium dioxide, triethanolamine, vitamin A palmitate, etc.

Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

They also help to preserve healthy skin and prevent premature aging.

These are some standard terms you might come across when shopping for organic items:

  • Paraben Free: These are chemicals that keep certain cosmetic products stable. However, they can be toxic if used in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free means that the product doesn't contain any essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty-Free--No animals were hurt in the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
  • Vegetarian/Vegetarian - All ingredients are vegan or vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
  • Non-Toxic -- The product doesnโ€™t contain toxic substances, carcinogens, harmful compounds, or any other dangerous chemicals that could pose a threat to your health.
  • Biodegradable - The product will eventually be broken down into harmless parts when it is disposed of.
  • Pesticide Free โ€“ There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
  • GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
  • Certified Organic refers to ingredients that were grown using methods that protect soil, water, air, wildlife and farmers.

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They also contain more nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, E, and K, plus omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are free of harmful chemicals and sewage sludge.

Although organics are most commonly associated with produce, organics can also be found in dairy, meats, poultry, eggs and baked goods.

"Organic" is defined by the USDA as crops that have been grown following strict guidelines set forth in federal government standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

Further, the farmer must be careful about the amount of pesticide and fertilizer he uses in the growing season. GMOs, artificial growthhormones, synthetic insecticides, and synthetic fertilizers cannot be used by farmers.

All the above requirements are met by vegetables and fruits that are labeled "100% Organic". But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. They will instead label their product "made with organic ingredients." "

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

While organic food may be more expensive, consumers think its superior quality justifies the higher price. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
