What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another is the cost for inputs and labour required to grow organic crops. There are other factors such as transportation costs, marketing and taxes. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.

Here are some key differences between organic and traditional foods.
