Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I go organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally Grown – Produce that meets strict organic standards but has not received USDA certification.

Pastured/Freerange - Products made from animals who graze freely and are outdoors.

These labels indicate whether the product meets certain criteria.

  • No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • There is no sewage sludge
  • GMOs banned
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
  • No irradiation

What are organic products that can be used on the skin?

Organic skincare products are made without synthetic chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, petrolatum, petroleum jelly, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, talc, triclosan, titanium dioxide, triethanolamine, vitamin A palmitate, etc.

Organic skincare products don't contain artificial colours or fragrances.

They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.

Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:

  • Paraben Free - these are a group of chemicals used to keep certain cosmetic products stable, but they can be toxic if consumed in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free: The product is free of essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty Free - No animals were injured during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients are ingredients that have been naturally extracted from plants or animals.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian - the ingredients are either vegan or vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
  • Non-Toxic-The product doesn't contain any toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and/or other harmful substances that could be harmful to your health.
  • Biodegradable: The product will be discarded as harmless components.
  • Pesticide Free – There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
  • GMO-Free means that no ingredient in the product contains genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic is a certification that the ingredients of the recipe were grown using sustainable methods.

Statistics

  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.

Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although there is no evidence eating organic foods prevents or treats any diseases, some studies suggest that consuming them might improve overall health by reducing exposure to specific contaminants and pesticides. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
