Frequently Asked Questions

What are some organic skin products?

Organic skincare products don't contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens or phthalates.

Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.

Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:

  • Paraben Free - these are a group of chemicals used to keep certain cosmetic products stable, but they can be toxic if consumed in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free: The product is free of essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients – The ingredient is naturally derived either from a plant or an animal.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian – The ingredients can either be vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-Free: This is when gluten was eliminated from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic-The product doesn't contain any toxic chemicals, carcinogens, and/or other harmful substances that could be harmful to your health.
  • Biodegradable product - when thrown out, the product will disintegrate into harmless components.
  • Pesticide-Free - No pesticides have been used in the growing and harvesting process.
  • GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
  • Certified Organic means that all of the ingredients in the formula were grown using methods that protect the soil, water, air, wildlife, and farmers.

What are organic products for beauty?

Organic Beauty Products contain natural ingredients without artificial chemicals, such as parabens and phenoxyethanol. These ingredients can be found in many conventional beauty products such as cosmetics, shampoos and perfumes.

Organic beauty products are not tested on animals and contain no genetically modified organisms.

The USDA defines the term' organic' as "a system of production that fosters cycling of resources" and has been used for decades to describe foodstuffs grown without pesticides.

Due to the adverse effects of chemicals on our bodies, there has been a growing demand for eco-friendly cosmetics in recent years.

These include cancer, allergies, skin irritation, hormonal imbalance, and premature aging.

Organic beauty products are created by companies that care about the environment and create safe, healthy products for customers.

Why should I go organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

Statistics

  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. That year, retail spending on certified organic products totalled nearly $1.5 billion, representing a 23 percent increase since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
