Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge and confinement feeding. No growth hormones or animal testing are done. These crops can naturally grow, so no chemicals are used by farmers to combat pests or weeds.

Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organics are also better for your health as they contain more nutrients that conventional food. Organic products tend to be higher in fiber and lower fat than conventionally produced foods.

Organic foods must comply with strict guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the National Organic Program Standards, all certified organic food must be free from prohibited materials such as antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and industrial solvents. Organic food must be grown without the use of toxic chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers.

What's the difference?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How can I tell if my produce has been certified organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • There are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • Animals are never given hormones.
  • No growth-promoting drug
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage effluent
  • GMOs prohibited
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge, if it's not a GMO
  • No irradiation

How To

What happens to your body if you switch to organic products

Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They are free-range and come from clean water sources. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was created by nature, and therefore does not contain harmful substances.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. But, not everyone believes that natural foods are healthy. Many experts say there isn't much difference between conventional and organic foods. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. But organic produce has fewer pollutants and pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce.

In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. For organic meats, poultry, eggs and seafood, you should check with your local supermarket. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.

These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
