Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of organic farming?

Organic farming is a way for farmers to grow food naturally without the use chemicals. Farmers do not need to worry about harmful pesticides harming their crops or animals.

Organic farming also allows for more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers promote healthy plants and decrease the amount of chemicals used.

Organic farming is also sustainable. Many farmers use composting methods to replenish soil nutrients. This reduces the risk of pollution and helps conserve precious resources.

Organic farming improves crop yields while also helping the environment. This is because organic agriculture uses less water in the growing season.

Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. Consumers who become more aware of the dangers of pesticides and chemical fertilizers demand healthier foods.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is growing in popularity.

What's the difference?

Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic food is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. Natural does not always mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

What are organic foods and how do they compare?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used, and there is no animal testing. These crops can naturally grow, so no chemicals are used by farmers to combat pests or weeds.

Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organic foods are healthier than conventional foods because they have more nutrients. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • To provide the highest quality products and services to every customer, with a dedicated workforce that puts the customer first and takes the extra step to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and loyalty. (hollinsorganic.com)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?

Organic products are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and genetic manipulation. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. Organic products are those that do not contain chemicals or other additives. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. This term is often used to refer to foods that are not processed into final forms (such as fruits). Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. But, not everyone believes that natural foods are healthy. Experts believe there is no difference in organic and conventional food. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. Organic produce has less pesticide residues and pollutant than conventionally grown food.

In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.

These foods should be avoided by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Pesticides can harm unborn infants and babies.
