Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

Are organic meats better?

If you've been paying attention for any time, you probably already know the answer to this question. But here's the rub, organic food is becoming more popular while conventional food continues to fall out of favour.

Organic foods are more appealing because they are healthier. Organic foods are also safer for our overall health and reduce pollution.

There are many sides to this coin. Organic produce takes more time to grow and requires greater resources. This means that organic food costs more money than its non-organic counterpart.

Organic meats can be more expensive that those from conventionally raised animals. There are however ways to lower these costs without sacrificing the quality of organic meats.

Buy local to save money. Locally grown produce helps to keep the prices down because farmers are given incentives to grow healthy crops.

Deals are another way to cut costs. Organics often come with discounts.

Finally, another way to save money is by eating less meat. Meat production can be costly due to the feed needed to raise livestock.

There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat is real food grown without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or hormones. It also means that the animals weren't fed any genetically modified feed. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are better for the environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.

The best way to ensure that you eat healthy organic meats is to buy them locally whenever possible. Local shopping helps keep more money in your community than it does out of state. Local businesses often pass on savings to customers shopping locally. Shopping locally helps to keep American workers employed, as opposed to sending them overseas.

What are organic products for beauty?

Organic Beauty Products contain natural ingredients without artificial chemicals, such as parabens and phenoxyethanol. These ingredients are present in all conventional beauty products including shampoos and cosmetics.

Organic beauty products are not tested on animals and contain no genetically modified organisms.

The USDA defines organic production as "a system of production which fosters the cycle of resources" and it has been used since decades to refer to foods grown without pesticides.

Due to the adverse effects of chemicals on our bodies, there has been a growing demand for eco-friendly cosmetics in recent years.

These include cancer, allergies and skin irritation.

Organic beauty products are created by companies that care about the environment and create safe, healthy products for customers.

How can you tell if your produce is organic?

These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.

USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets certain criteria.

  • There are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
  • No genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • No hormones are ever given to the animal
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage sludge
  • GMOs banned
  • Antibiotics have never been administered
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage solids (if it's not GMO).
  • No irradiation

What are organic fruits?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They contain more nutrients such vitamins A, C. E, and, in some cases, omega-3 oils. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are produced with sustainable farming practices that promote soil quality and biological diversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.

Many organic products are not associated with produce. They include dairy and meat, poultry, eggs baked goods, pet food, household cleaning supplies, and personal care products.

The USDA defines organic as crops that are grown according to federal standards. This means that farmers can't use non-organic methods of growing these foods. They can use approved natural pest control methods such as crop rotation, cover cropping and organic animal feed.

Further, the farmer must be careful about the amount of pesticide and fertilizer he uses in the growing season. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.

Fruits and vegetables labelled "100% organic" meet all the requirements above. However, some farms won't claim that their products are 100% organic. This would confuse the consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

Statistics

  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)

Are there any negatives to buying organic goods?

Organic food is well-known for its many health benefits. There are however some downsides. These include higher consumer prices, lower quality standards, and fewer choices.

You can't go wrong with wanting more options when it comes grocery shopping. However, we have been taught to expect poor quality food. This is why grocery stores are stocked with the same prepackaged products.

But today, organic food is becoming increasingly popular because it offers better nutrition and tastes great. How can you convince people to pay a little more?

But you could still tell them that organic foods are more expensive. However, this doesn't mean that organic food tastes better. This might make them suspicious about your motives.

Instead, it would be best if you highlighted its advantages. Organic food is more nutritious and has fewer pesticides or antibiotics. Plus, it's grown without synthetic fertilizers and herbicides, which means it's healthier for us and our environment.

Many people turn down organic food simply because it is too costly. But as long as they consider the health benefits, they may decide that spending a few dollars per week is worth it.
