However, livestock production can also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. For example, livestock consume much more land than other crops and emit more greenhouse gases during their lifetimes.

Therefore, reducing the amount of meat we eat is a key part of climate-smart agriculture. Eating less meat, especially red meat, can lower our carbon footprints by replacing it with healthier foods, such as fish or poultry.

In addition, lowering the amount of meat we eat can help protect against health problems caused by excess red meat consumption. This is especially true for people living in high-income countries, where diets have become overly saturated with red meat.

Grass-fed

Grass-fed beef is the best meat for your health. It contains more vitamins, antioxidants, and omega 3 fatty acids than commercial grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef is also lower in saturated fat and calories than grain-fed beef.

Getting grass-fed beef means having a farm that can afford to be certified organic, which involves lots of record keeping and expensive inspections. This can be prohibitive to many farmers, particularly small farms.

Climate-smart agriculture is a way for farmers to improve their productivity, adapt to climate change impacts, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions through soil carbon sequestration and diversification through crop rotation or intercropping. This practice can help vulnerable communities avoid poverty and climate-related risks.

The USDA recently awarded nearly $490 million in grants to projects and partnerships that will help farmers adopt climate-smart practices. However, it is unclear which specific farming practices will be applied to these projects, how they will be measured and reported, or how their impact on farmers will be evaluated.

For the USDA to label meat or poultry as organic, it must come from livestock that was raised without added hormones (vaccines are okay) on certified organic land and given year-round access to the outdoors. For dairy and beef cows, this means they spent their lives grazing on pasture during the grazing season.

This is a long-standing, sustainable farming method that far exceeds industrial-based methods of farming. Often overlooked, pasture-raised labels are an important way to support climate-smart agriculture and help consumers make informed food choices.

Pasture-raised chickens spend their lives out in the open – scratching at the ground, pecking at bugs and grasses, eating insects and worms from the soil, and even harvesting seeds. They also produce healthier, tastier meat and eggs than conventional chickens, because they spend their entire lives on a natural diet that includes the nutrients they need to thrive.
