Which organic products are most in demand?

Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.

The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.

What is organic food?

Organic food does not use pesticides or fertilizers. These chemicals can cause health problems in organic foods.

Organic food can be grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful substances. These chemicals may cause damage to animals as well as humans.

Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.

Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. The National Organic Program Standards require that all organic foods are free of prohibited substances such as antibiotics and growth hormones, genetically modified organisms or industrial solvents. Organic food must not be produced with toxic chemicals, petroleum or sewage sludges or ionizing radioactive substances.

How To

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

Organic foods are produced from plants and animals that have been grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other additives. They can't be genetically modified or exposed to ionizing radiation. The food must not contain artificial flavours, colours, flavour enhancements, or preservatives. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

In 1845, Justus von Liebig, a chemist, first coined the term "organic", meaning "life-giving", to describe the properties and characteristics of manure. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic simply means the product is made from only naturally occurring substances such proteins, carbohydrate, and minerals.

Over the past decade, organic products have seen a dramatic increase in consumption. According to statistics, approximately 50% of the world’s population consumes at minimum one organic product each day. This percentage is increasing and will reach 70%, 80% and 90% by 2020.

There are many reasons consumers choose organic products. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.

While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. The availability of suitable land for organic agriculture is one factor. Another factor is the price of inputs as well as labour for organic farming. The cost of transportation, marketing, and taxes are just a few other factors. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.

Below is a summary of the major differences between organic food and conventional food.

  • Organic produce is naturally free of synthetic fertilizers and growth regulators as well as hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals.
  • Organic livestock is fed a diet based on grasses and grains rather than corn and soybean meals.
