What are organic food products?

- Paraben Free is a grouping of chemicals that are used to maintain certain cosmetic products safe, but can be toxic when consumed in large quantities.
- Fragrance Free - The product is not scented with essential oils.
- Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
- Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
- Vegan/Vegetarian - the ingredients are either vegan or vegetarian.
- Gluten-Free: This is when gluten was eliminated from the formulation.
- Non-Toxic – The product is free of toxins, carcinogens and other dangerous compounds that can harm your health.
- Biodegradable - The product will eventually be broken down into harmless parts when it is disposed of.
- Pesticide-Free – No pesticides were used in the growing or harvesting of crops.
- GMO-Free refers to the fact that no ingredients in the product contain genetically modified organisms.
- Certified Organic is a certification that the ingredients of the recipe were grown using sustainable methods.
How can you tell whether food is organic?
Any chef will tell you fresh ingredients are more important than any other ingredient. It's because we feel better when food is well-prepared.
This is true for food as well. When we buy organics, we know exactly where it came from and how it was grown. It was not treated with harmful chemicals.
Organic foods are made without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones, steroids, antibiotics, or genetically altered organisms (GMO). These substances are forbidden for organic farmers.
Growing organic crops is an art. There are many safe ways to grow them.
Organic farming is often called sustainable agriculture. This means that while it uses fewer resources than conventional methods, it provides the necessary nutrients to sustain life.
Organic farming practices include crop rotation, composting manure, cover cropping, and intercropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.
They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. We can also find organic farms in our urban surroundings.
Two types of organic product certification programs exist. One is certified by the USDA National Organic Program, and the other is certified by independent certifying agencies. Both require strict adherence to organic standards.
USDA seals, or O Seals, may be attached to certified organic products. These symbols indicate that the product meets federal requirements.
Are organic foods better for us?
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.
Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?
Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.
In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.
The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require that operations are audited annually to verify compliance with the strict standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.
Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
