It also involves the use of traps and mating disruption. Culture controls include crop rotation and the use of crop varieties that are resistant to certain pests.

Water

There are a number of solutions available to organic farmers that can help them overcome water challenges. These include regenerative agriculture practices that conserve water quantity and promote water quality.

Regenerative practices such as crop rotations, inter-cropping, symbiotic associations, cover crops and minimum tillage, encourage soil fauna and flora to improve soil structure, increase soil biodiversity, promote nutrient cycling and improve retentive abilities of the soil for nutrients and water. They also decrease erosive forces on the soil and reduce the length of time it is exposed to nutrient losses, creating more stable systems that are resilient to droughts and climate change.

Similarly, sustainable water trading that shifts water to higher value uses can also help lessen regional economic damages from drought-induced water supply shortages and improve the health of source watersheds. Using these practices, governments can secure their source watersheds and build more reliable, long-term supplies of clean drinking water for downstream communities.

Nutrients

Nutrients are essential for healthy plant growth and good crop yields. Nevertheless, too much of any nutrient can have negative impacts. Excess phosphorus, for example, can move as nitrate into groundwater and cause drinking water problems, while excess nitrogen, copper, and zinc can cause algae blooms in surface waters or algae diseases in crop plants.

Organic farmers can use manures and composts to supply plant nutrients in the quantities that they need. Using them in combination with other fertility practices (e.g., crop rotation, cover crops) can correct nutrient imbalances.

However, because a high ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus is often present in manures, they can over-apply phosphorus in the same way that inorganic fertilizers can. When this happens, a soil becomes saturate with the easily soluble nutrient and microbial activity is suppressed.

Nutrient management is an important component of the organic farming system. It involves estimating nutrient needs, monitoring nutrient levels, and applying only those nutrients that are needed. Keeping these applications to a minimum will ensure that soil health is maintained and that nutrients are not applied at concentrations that can have negative impacts on crop yields or environmental conditions.
