Why is organic produce important?

It is essential for our health to eat organic produce. It's the best way to ensure we eat nutritious foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.

Organic food is also better tasting and more nutritious because it contains higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.

The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are over 30 million acres of US organic farmland.

As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms are free to charge less for their crops, as they don't need to pay expensive chemical inputs such insecticides orfungicides.

According to the Environmental Working Group organic food is 10 percent cheaper per pound than conventionally manufactured food. Switching to organic food is a smart move if you care about your health and that of your family.

Organic food is a popular choice to traditional American cuisines. While many believe organic food can only come from specialty markets and fine dining restaurants, it is not true. Organic food can be purchased in most grocery stores across the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. In 2012, the US market value for organic food was $43 Billion. This is an increase of $21 Billion from 2007.


What is inorganic foods?

Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food is produced naturally and without any harmful substances, such as chemical fertilizers or pesticides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.

The term organic refers to the way an agricultural product is grown. For example, organic farming uses natural methods and soil amendments to grow crops, while conventional farming uses synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines must be followed when organic food is labeled. The National Organic Program Standards state that organic food must be freed from banned substances like antibiotics, growthhormones, genetically altered organisms (GMOs) and industrial solvents. Organic food must not be produced with toxic chemicals, petroleum or sewage sludges or ionizing radioactive substances.


How can I tell if my produce has been certified organic?

These labels will help you ensure that organic produce is purchased.

USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.

Certified Naturally Grown – Produce that meets strict organic standards but has not received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets certain criteria.

What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?

Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

What You Should Know About Organic Foods

Organic foods come from plants and animals without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or additives. They are not subject to genetic engineering or the use of ionizing radioactive radiation. The food must not contain artificial flavours, colours, flavour enhancements, or preservatives. It should not contain genetically modified animals (GMOs).

In 1845, Justus von Liebig, a chemist, first coined the term "organic", meaning "life-giving", to describe the properties and characteristics of manure. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. In this context, organic means that the product contains only naturally occurring substances such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals that occur in nature.

Over the past decade, organic products have seen a dramatic increase in consumption. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This number is rising and is expected increase to 70%, 90%, and 80% by 2020.

There are many reasons consumers choose organic products. Organic produce can be preferred for its taste; others prefer them for being healthier. Some people believe organic farming to be more environmentally friendly. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.

Organic foods are more expensive than those made from conventional food, though prices may vary by country and region. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another is the cost of inputs and labour needed for organic cultivation. Other factors include transportation costs, marketing costs, and taxes. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.

Here are some key differences between organic and traditional foods.

  • Organic produce is naturally free of synthetic fertilizers and growth regulators as well as hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals.
  • Organic livestock is fed grasses & grains, not corn and soybean meal.
  • Organic milk comes only from cows who are fed hay and pasture grasses all-naturally.
  • All raw materials used to make organic products are organically certified.
  • No pesticides or other harmful chemicals are allowed during organic fruits and vegetables' growth and processing stages.
  • Organic meats, poultry, and seafood don't require radiation.
  • Before using raw nuts or seeds, they must be soaked.
  • Organic cooking only uses healthy oils.
  • Organic eggs are laid outdoors by hens.
  • Honey is extracted using traditional methods by bees.
  • Organic chocolate is made from beans and sugar that have been grown organically and then processed.
  • Organic wines do not contain any chemical additives.
  • Organic tea leaves are made from hand-picked plants.
  • Organic cotton can be grown without pesticides or herbicides.
  • Organic cereals and flours don't contain preservatives or artificial colours.
