What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have 4 stomach compartments: Rumen, reticulum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

  • Biodegradable product - when thrown out, the product will disintegrate into harmless components.
  • Pesticide-Free – No pesticides were used in the growing or harvesting of crops.
  • GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
  • Certified Organic means that all the ingredients have been grown using methods that protect the soil and water as well as wildlife and farmers.

Organic farming is a way for farmers to grow food naturally without the use chemicals. The farmers don't have to worry about pesticides causing harm to their crops and animals.

5 Reasons to buy organic products

Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or irradiated ingredients. Their production does not use sewage sludge and industrial solvents. During its growing cycle, the food's natural environment will be protected from contamination. It does not contain artificial preservatives or additives. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics.
